Book 5: Penelope Pembroke and The Larcenous Legacy
Father Loeffler, long-time priest of St. Hyacinth's where Penelope worships, is retiring to Florida. He is replaced by young Father Kristopher Dombrowski, whose family immigrated from Poland at the end of World War II. He brings with him his sister Ivana, who was widowed when her now 9-year-old son was an infant, and who has been keeping house for her brother. Officer Parnell Garrett is soon under her spell. Penelope, whose job it is as sacristan is to make sure the altar appurtenances are well-maintained, notices that the chalice disappears soon after Father Kris's cousin Nicky from Chicago visits. Father Kris says it has been "damaged" and is being repaired, but Penelope isn't so sure. When Sam, "the gray ghost' visits the next time, he's more than interested in the chalice and Father Kris's family background. Another encounter with Nicky turns violent and sends Officer Garrett into self-imposed exile despite being held blameless by the Amaryllis Police Department and the community. Penelope visits Ivana to offer support and sees Sam, a self-admitted lapsed Catholic, nosing around inside the church. Remembering the missing chalice, and thinking of all she doesn't know about the man she's fallen in love with but who can make no commitment to her, she makes accusations she can't take back. As the chalice has gone missing from the church, so Sam goes missing from Penelope's life--and the return of either one seems hopeless. ** Follow the on-going stories of Shana and Peter, Jake, Miss Maude Pendleton, Brad and Rosabel, Mary Lynn and Harry and their newly-adopted daughters, as well as the saga of Amaryllis, Arkansas--a nice place to live.
